Everton are reportedly close to making their first signing of the transfer window as they are in advanced talks to bring experienced free agent Ashley Young to the club.

Young was at Aston Villa last season but the club decided to not extend his contract and released him at the end of the campaign after he made 32 appearances in all competitions.

The 38-year-old was used as cover at full-back by both Steven Gerrard and Unai Emery performing at a consistent level throughout the season with Sean Dyche now wanting him at Everton.

Everton’s pre-season starts soon with the squad travelling to Switzerland so Young would join up with them as soon as possible.

Young has vast Premier League experience at the very highest level as he was at Manchester United for nine years and he only left the club in 2020 to go to Inter Milan where he won the Serie A title.

He had offers to return back to another European league as well as other offers from English clubs but he has turned them down to join Everton who stayed in the Premier League on the last day of the season with a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth.

A deal is set to be agreed within the next 48 hours and Everton gave Young a one year contract with the option of a further year which would keep him at the club until he his 40-years-old.

Everton have also enquired about Tom Heaton who is currently at Manchester United and was Dyche’s number one for a while whilst at Burnley.
