Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott is anticipating a difficult game against Chelsea in their opening game of the new season.

After a very underwhelming 2022/23 campaign in which Liverpool and Chelsea missed out on the Champions League and ended the season without a trophy, both teams will be raring to hear the first whistle on Sunday.

The Reds are unbeaten in their last 11 games and are undefeated in their last five away games while Chelsea have won three out of their previous 10 games at Stamford Bridge, and have not lost to Liverpool in their past five meetings

“Yeah, it’s great. We just want to get the season started off and we want to kick on. It’s going to be a tough first game but what a way to open the Premier League on our first game against Chelsea. It will be tough but we’re ready to go and we can’t wait to get started,” Elliott told Liverpoolfc.com.

“I think it’s going to be two teams battling it out. Both teams didn’t really have the best of seasons [in 2022-23], if we’re being truthful, and both are going to want to stamp our authority and make the most of the first game. It’s going to be tough for both teams and, in my opinion, it’s going to be who wants it more. I feel like we’re definitely ready.”

He added: “Definitely. I feel like this pre-season has been a lot more intense, we’ve worked a lot on things that didn’t go so well last season. We’re just all excited to put that into the games coming up and hopefully we can apply it in the matches and get the results from it.

“Personally, to be in the team, to kind of cement my place in the team. It’s going to be tough; [there are] world-class players here so it’s never going to be easy.

“At the same time I just need to support the team and whenever I’m called upon just make sure I go out and apply myself well, give it my best shot and play for the badge, which is what I want to do each and every game. And most importantly, enjoy it.”
