Luis Diaz again levelled the score for the Reds after the Cherries took an early lead through Ghana striker Antoine Semenyo.

Summer signing Dominik Szoboszlai went to ground after a challenge at the corner of the box by Joe Rothwell and Mohamed Salah converted the rebound after his penalty was parried by Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto before Jota handed the hosts a two-goal cushion.

“Yeah, I think [it was] the opposite of the first week [against Chelsea] where we started well and then we lost control. This one was quite the opposite: we didn’t start well at all and we could turn it around. So, happy for the reaction but now let’s try to mix both the games and give it a go for all the whole 90 minutes,” Jota said.

“Especially as well being down to 10 men and it’s still early on in the season. Everyone reacted very well, trying to help each other, even though we know we are not still at our best physically. But a great effort from everyone and very happy to get these three points.

Mac Allister was dismissed for a foul on Ryan Christie just before the hour after which Wataru Endo climbed off the bench to make his debut for the club,

“We were joking on the bench it was almost like we were playing better with 10 than with 11! I think everyone really felt the moment to stand out, to be able to help each other, to stay closer to each other. And I think that’s what we did. We got these three points and I think it’s deserved,” the Portugal international added.

“Yeah, I think Macca as well, now playing a bit deeper and trying to help us build. Dom, you can see he is running the entire game and doesn’t feel tired. I think they will both help us. And [Wataru] Endo as well, debut [in] hard circumstances and did it quite well. So, yeah, the more time we spend together we will get better and we can develop throughout the season.

“Yeah, we know each other as well for a while. And we know we have people on the bench that can come on and make the difference, so while we are on the pitch we give absolutely everything. We all know we have the quality to make that impact in games. Firstly for the team everyone showed up today; we know throughout the season we need everyone so let’s stick together.

“Yeah, like usual. Ali is always there to try to save us. I think he also deserves to get more clean sheets but we will work hard for that.”
