The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp looks to strengthen his midfield following the exit of five midfielders including former captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

The Reds have already brought in three midfielders following the arrival of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, and Wataru Endo, however, it is expected that at least one midfielder will be added to the squad before the window closes on September 1.

Liverpool cooled their interest in Kone after he suffered a serious knee injury at the under-21s European Championships back in June and he’s yet to resume full training.

The highly-rated midfielder has two years remaining on his current deal with Borussia Monchengladbach therefore the Bundesliga side are under no pressure to sell him.

“We don’t have to sell him,” Virkus said. “But it was always like this: if there is another immense offer, then we have to think about it. But that’s not the plan. Our plan is to keep Kone.

“Kone is a player who has something different, he gives you as a team a better balance in midfield. He’s coming back after the international break and he’s very important to us, a tough and intelligent footballer. We need stability in this position.”
