Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has provided insight into his decision not to celebrate Darwin Nunez’s incredible injury-time winning goal against Newcastle United.
In consecutive Premier League matches, Liverpool demonstrated their resilience by rallying from behind to secure three points at St. James’ Park, even with just 10 players on the field following Virgil van Dijk’s red card due to a challenge on Alexander Isak.
Despite Newcastle taking the lead in the 25th minute courtesy of Anthony Gordon’s strike, Liverpool orchestrated a remarkable comeback with Darwin Nunez’s late brace sealing the victory.
While the Liverpool players and the backroom staff celebrated exuberantly, Klopp remained composed until receiving confirmation that the Uruguayan striker was onside when he received Mohamed Salah’s pass.
“Nowadays I don’t celebrate this goals any more because I was not sure if there was an offside,” the German told Sky Sports.
“I was pretty sure there wasn’t but then a minute or so later when the VAR check was over the boys behind on the touchline were really celebrating. Then I felt massive relief.
“The way we played after the red card gave us the feeling we can do something here if we don’t concede (a second goal). If you can defend with passion and play with an idea, then we have a chance to get a point here. And we have a point and a win as well.”
