With the end of the transfer window in sight, Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz is the latest name to be linked with a move to Anfield.

Liverpool continue to search for midfield reinforcements before the window closes on Friday to help Jurgen Klopp complete the rebuild of his engine room.

Ryan Gravenberch appears to head up Liverpool’s list of options but it remains to be seen as to whether Bayern Munich are prepared to part with the former Ajax youngster.

There is a feeling however that the Anfield hierarchy could also target another specialist defensive midfielder to help share the workload with Wataru Endo.

Cheick Doucoure of Crystal Palace and Joao Palhinha of Fulham appear to be of interest but could be ruled out by huge price tags with clubs being left little time to find replacements.

“I think that it’s crystal clear that Liverpool wants to add between now and the end of the window if the right name becomes available. I would still keep an eye on Ryan Gravenberch because that’s a long-standing Liverpool target and the player is keen on the move. It’s just a case of Bayern insisting they don’t want to sell and we wait and see towards the end of the window whether anything changes there. I think from Liverpool’s point of view as well, because they put that £111m down unsuccessfully for Moises Caicedo, they’ve sent a message out to the market that they’ve got big money to spend.

The Transfer Room Verdict

Liverpool’s fantastic ten-man victory over Newcastle on Sunday showed resilience and the potential of Klopp’s new squad. It should not cover up the fact however that reinforcements in defence and midfield are still needed ahead of the window slamming shut.
