Liverpool defender Joel Matip has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Rennes as they prepare for a scenario where Arthur Theate leaves the club before the transfer window closes.
The retired Cameroon international has just one year left on his contract at Anfield and is expected to leave for free next summer after joining in 2016.
Matip has fallen behind Ibrahima Konate in the pecking order to partner Virgil van Dijk in the centre of Jurgen Klopp’s defence. He did replace the injured Frenchman however for Liverpool’s dramatic 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Sunday.
According to L’Equipe, the 32-year-old is now a target for Ligue 1 club Rennes who are bracing themselves for the potential loss of Theate.
The Belgium international has been strongly linked with a move to RB Leipzig over recent weeks but there is also reported to be interest from both Liverpool and Fulham.
Theate would fit the profile that Reds chiefs are rumoured to be searching for as a player who can play as a left-sided centre-back or as a left-back.
With Matip likely to be available for a small fee this summer, could they use him as part of the deal to secure a move for Theate?
