Liverpool have begun the 2023-24 Premier League campaign on a positive note, a sentiment emphasised by Cody Gakpo.
With seven points accumulated from three matches, the team’s performance reflects a commendable start to their journey.
Following a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the inaugural match of the season, Liverpool regained momentum with crucial victories over Bournemouth and Newcastle United. These wins underscore the team’s resilience and determination.
Looking ahead, Jurgen Klopp’s squad is set to face Aston Villa at Anfield on the forthcoming Sunday, marking the conclusion of their initial phase in the new season. This encounter precedes the September international break, providing a moment to regroup and refocus before continuing their campaign.
“I think we did quite well,” Gakpo told Liverpoolfc.com. “Of course, there’s room for improvement, but to get a point at Stamford Bridge, even though we could’ve won the game, is still something to work with.
“And then two wins in a row is great, especially the last one [at Newcastle], it was really nice, [but] we have to keep working and keep winning.”
He added: “The mood was good, of course, but I think everybody realises it’s just the beginning of the season and we have to keep going.
“It’s not like we won two games and it’s done. We have to keep going and we are hungry for more.”
Gakpo has featured in all three games for Liverpool and has been impressed with the performance of the team, having secured both of their wins with 10 men each.
“It was really crazy! I think we deserved it as well. We played really good, even though we were down with one player. We tried to keep calm, stay calm on the ball and at the end we got some spaces and then we’ve got Darwin, who was on his bike and shot two wonderful goals. We were really happy,” the Netherlands international added.
“I think it’s helpful for me and also for the team when it’s needed, but I think at the end it’s just about what is the best for the team to win the game. I think I played now in the eight and the nine. It’s just for me to improve in both positions. Obviously I played last season a lot as a nine, so that’s where I’m a little bit more used to playing. As an eight as well I can improve and then I can help the team more.”
On the Aston Villa clash, he concluded: “Every time it’s amazing. I think the fans are wonderful. They are so important to us, like you saw in the last home game.
“We were down with one goal and they just were trying to push us to get the equaliser and then eventually we won. It’s also because of them [that we won], so we have to give them more wins back. It’s a good team [Aston Villa], but we are as well. We have to just be ready and give it our best.”
