Danny Murphy has expressed his belief that Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi is the ideal candidate to take over the reins from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Speculation had arisen about Klopp’s potential appointment as the head coach of the Germany national team, with earlier rumours linking him to the role after Joachim Low’s departure in the summer of 2021.

However, Klopp’s agent, Marc Kosicke, has firmly denied any such possibility, quashing the rumours surrounding Klopp’s departure from Liverpool amid the recent sacking of Hansi Flick as the Germany national team manager.

In light of this, Murphy has suggested that Roberto De Zerbi, who has been impressing with his work at Brighton, could be the ideal candidate to succeed Klopp when the time comes for the German manager to step down from his role at Liverpool.

“I’ve got the answer, so I’m not worried about (Klopp leaving),” Murphy told talkSPORT. “I think De Zerbi is perfect. He’ll be ready then (to take over).

“I think he plays great football, he looks a strong character, he’s learning his trade in this league with Brighton and doing it superbly well.

“I don’t see a better candidate.”

De Zerbi guided Brighton to the UEFA Europa League last season after finishing 6th in the Premier League table.

“Things change in football really quickly. So, the flavour of the month might be someone else this time next year,” said the former England international. “But I think he’s (De Zerbi) the real deal.

“There is something about him. After meeting him as well, (I can say) he’s got real gravitas. A real presence. And I love the way his teams play.

“But I can’t see Klopp going for some time yet. He’s got this new influx of players, and he seems enthused by Liverpool’s start (to the season) and the promising start of some of the new signings.”
