It was one of the biggest travesties in English football when the Glazer family purchased Manchester United by way of a leveraged buyout in 2005. Almost 20 years on and they are continuing to live off the profits of a club they never paid for in the first place, and have no intention of giving up their tainted throne.

Whatever your opinions of Qatar and Sheikh Jassim are, the Glazer’s rejecting a bid worth almost double what the club is worth has to be called out. The family are a sign of greed knowing no bounds. That greed unfortunately doesn’t look like it will end soon.

The decision to explore strategic alternatives was announced in November of last year by the club, and nearly a year on there has been absolutely no communication. Joel Glazer declared after the Super League debacle that he intended to interact with the fans more. That letter was penned to supporters on the 21st of April 2021. It remains the last direct contact from the clubs owners to the fans.

Manchester United 1878-2023

Manchester United are a club with no heartbeat at the moment. The Glazer’s ban supporters for being “ticket touts”, but admitted to doing the same thing against Galatasaray in the Champions League. Over 2,000 away fans in the home section at Old Trafford. No repercussions. Of course not.

There is no football without fans. There is no profit for the Glazer’s to make without fans, but yet they treat them same fans like they’re nothing. They have bled dry an institute that was once the life and soul of a city. That red blood has now been washed away by a sea of blue across that same city.

Interaction needs to happen, fast. Thursday was reported to be the day Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25% vote would be put to the board. That’s now cancelled. The deal will now apparently not be done for a number of months. That could soon become another year.

Sheikh Jassim was right to walk away from this deal. Being at the circus is fun, but after a while it begins to bore you. The initial thrill wears off, and you’re left with soggy popcorn and below bar soft drinks. Sheikh Jassim stayed at this circus way too long, and the Glazer family didn’t offer up anything to make him stick around.

INEOS and Sir Jim are looking to help the Glazer’s run the circus, but will they be able to change the running order of the acts? Can they bring in new talent to wow the crowd? Or will it be the same show week in week out, just with a new shade of make up? It’s time to let the fans know.
