Ramsay joins a list of players who are making a premature return to Liverpool after unsuccessful loan spells, including Fabio Carvalho, Rhys Williams, and Nat Phillips.

Carvalho has, however, joined Hull City for the remainder of the season and recently made his debut in a 2-1 defeat against Norwich City on Friday night.

Ramsay moved to Preston North End on a season-long loan deal, but his time with the Lilywhites has been marred by fitness struggles.

Having managed only two appearances for the club, Ramsay faced a setback early in the season with a serious knee injury, sidelining him for almost four months.

His debut under manager Lowe finally came in November against Middlesbrough, followed by a starting role against Queens Park Rangers.

Unfortunately, illness further interrupted his progress, preventing him from participating in Preston’s matches during the festive period. He has subsequently not been included in a Preston matchday squad since December 9.

“We’ve got no information on it yet, but Liverpool are calling him back. We are just waiting on them to officially announce it, but he has gone back to Liverpool yeah,” the former Plymouth Argyle manager confirmed, as quoted by the Lancashire Post.

He added: “He had been fit. The first time he went back was for a setback, but he trained every day. He came back to us in November time and the last few weeks, when he was available, his fitness was fine.

“He had Covid obviously, but in terms of fitness – it was an issue because he wasn’t fit enough to be selected early doors. He was then fit and available, coming up against Middlesbrough and starting against QPR. After that, he wasn’t and it’d only been the last week or so he was back fit.”

Ramsay’s contributions to Jurgen Klopp’s team last season were limited due to injuries, allowing him to make only two first-team appearances – having joined them from Scottish Premiership outfit Aberdeen in the summer of 2022.
