Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has come to terms with Al Ettifaq to terminate his contract after a brief six-month stint, paving the way for his move to Ajax, as reported by The Athletic.

According to the online news portal, both Henderson and the Saudi Pro League club are currently finalising the termination of a three-year contract signed last summer.

The agreement ensures that no transfer fee will be involved in Henderson’s departure from Al Ettifaq.

The 33-year-old is expected to return to the UK from Al Ettifaq’s winter training camp in Abu Dhabi, having reached a preliminary agreement to join Ajax.

The proposed move to Ajax is still pending completion, with paperwork and details requiring ironing out before Henderson’s return to European football is confirmed after his brief stint in the SPL.

Ajax coach John van ‘t Schip has openly acknowledged the club’s keen interest in signing Henderson during the January transfer window.

The Dutch club actively pursue Henderson as their primary target for an experienced central midfielder, aiming to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season.

Van ‘t Schip confirmed the ongoing negotiations in an interview with ESPN Netherlands, stating that discussions are currently in progress regarding the potential transfer.

“There is serious talk going on with Henderson,” Van ‘t Schip said. “He still has some things to arrange in Saudi Arabia.

“It could be a nice match. It’s no secret that we could really use that type of player. Other guys can benefit from that.”

Henderson ended his 12-year tenure with Liverpool in July and made a move to Saudi Arabia last summer. He has made 17 league appearances, contributing five assists, with Al-Ettifaq currently positioned eighth in the standings, trailing 28 points behind league leaders Al-Hilal.

The Englishman joined Liverpool from Sunderland in a £20 million deal in June 2011. He amassed an impressive record during his time at Anfield, making 492 appearances, scoring 33 goals, and contributing with 57 assists.

His tenure at Liverpool was adorned with several trophies, including the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup, Carabao Cup, and Emirates FA Cup.
