Tottenham Hotspur remain optimistic about retaining the services of their manager Ange Postecoglou despite reported interest from Liverpool, according to the Telegraph.
The Australian tactician has caught the attention of top clubs with his impressive coaching style and recent success at Spurs after becoming the first manager in the Premier League to ever win the first three Manager of the Month awards.
In the wake of the surprising announcement that Jurgen Klopp will step down from his managerial role at Liverpool in the summer, speculation has been rife about potential successors for the prestigious position.
Among the names linked to the soon-to-be-vacant role is Tottenham boss Postecoglou as well as Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso who is reportedly top of the Reds’ list.
However, the Telegraph says Spurs hold no fears over the future of Postecoglou who moved to the club from Celtic on a four-year deal last summer with his contract ‘heavily incentivised’, meaning the 58-year-old can earn significant bonuses and pay rises.
The daily newspaper further claims that Postecoglou has suggested that he might be inclined to establish a long-term commitment in London, expressing his readiness to stay at Tottenham as long as the club continues to be satisfied with his performance.
Tottenham currently hold the 4th position in the league table and contending for a spot in the Champions League. It’s worth noting that they reached the final in the 2018/19 season but unfortunately lost to Liverpool.
Liverpool are expected to announce a new manager at the end of the season and fans are reportedly rooting for Alonso following his remarkable achievement with Leverkusen.
Leverkusen thrashed defending champions Bayern Munich 3-0 over the weekend to open up a five-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga.
After the sensational victory, Leverkusen Sporting Director Simon Rolfes said that he expects the 42-year-old to stay at the club next season. He told SPORT1: “Yes, I’m sure.”
“One [reason] is the contract. The other thing is how comfortable he feels, the family, himself and that he knows what he has in the club.
“He also has a very good team, we will have a very good perspective next year and there’s no change in the team.
“We will definitely have a top team available next year. These are all points that – in addition to contracts – coaches like Xabi, but also players who [attract] interest, often stay with us.”
Alonso spent five successful years at Anfield as a player between 2004 and 2009, during which he secured victories in the FA Cup and Champions League.
Following his time with Liverpool, the former Spain international featured for Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
He is also attracting interest from Chelsea who are reportedly looking to sack Mauricio Pochettino after a poor run of results.
