Liverpool have announced that Sven-Goran Eriksson will be part of the LFC Legends management team for the game against Ajax Legends at Anfield on March 23.

The former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson, who revealed last month that he has terminal cancer, will join a dugout of Liverpool greats, including Ian Rush, John Barnes, and John Aldridge, for the annual LFC Foundation charity match.

The call for Eriksson to take charge of the Reds side has grown in recent weeks, fueled by the 76-year-old expressing regret for never having coached Liverpool throughout his decorated 40-year career.

“My father is still alive and is still a Liverpool supporter, and I’m a Liverpool supporter as well, I’ve always been,” Eriksson told Sky News.

“So I always wished to be the manager of Liverpool, and that will not happen for sure, but I’m still a Liverpool fan.”

Jurgen Klopp recently extended an invitation to the Swede to visit Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre, where he witnessed the Premier League leaders in training and spent the day at the club’s Kirkby base.

It has now been confirmed that Eriksson will manage the Legends’ team at Anfield during next month’s international break.

Speaking last month, Klopp said: “I know him without knowing him, we never met. As far as I know. Yes, it was obviously very touching news when you heard about it.

“I heard for the first time about his admiration or love for Liverpool and that he was a fan for his whole life. So I heard now about the legends match and stuff like that.

“I’m not in charge of that so I can’t say anything about that. The only thing I can say is absolutely he’s very welcome to come here and he can sit in my seat in my office and do my job for a day if he wants. That’s no problem. Being on the sideline might be a little bit more difficult.

“To have him here and show him everything and how this wonderful club developed over the years, I think that’s definitely something we will tell him. He can come over and have a few wonderful hours here I’m sure.”

The LFC Foundation’s two previous legends matches against Manchester United and Celtic raised an incredible £1.45 million, now supporting vital work across the Liverpool City Region and beyond.

The first group of players has already been announced, featuring Istanbul hero goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek, fellow shot-stopper Sander Westerveld, defenders Martin Skrtel, Fabio Aurelio, and Gregory Vignal. Djibril Cisse will be among the attacking options, alongside former Reds and Ajax forward Ryan Babel, who will feature for both sides in the game.

One hundred percent of the proceeds raised from the fixture, presented by AXA, the club’s official training partner, will support the work of the LFC Foundation and its charity partners.
