Liverpool are expected to appoint Richard Hughes as the club’s new sporting director at the end of the current season, according to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Hughes has long been a target of interest for the Reds as the club undergoes a comprehensive restructuring of its backroom staff at the end of the 2023/24 season.
The 44-year-old transfer specialist will leave his position as Bournemouth’s technical director this summer with his assistant and former club captain Simon Francis to take over the role.
Romano posted on X: “Richard Hughes has already an agreement in place to join Liverpool, it will happen at the end of the season.
“After excellent job at Bournemouth with CEO Neill Blake, he’s gonna leave at the end of the season to sign for Liverpool.”
Hughes’ football career as a player may not have been illustrious, representing AFC Bournemouth and Portsmouth after graduating from Arsenal’s youth division.
However, since retiring from playing, the Scotsman has carved out a successful career behind the scenes, particularly with Bournemouth.
Hughes initially joined Bournemouth’s recruitment team during Eddie Howe’s managerial tenure.
Over time, he steadily progressed through the ranks and eventually assumed the role of the club’s technical director.
Despite not enjoying a high-profile playing career, Hughes’s contributions and expertise in player recruitment have been instrumental in Bournemouth’s operations.
Meanwhile, Michael Edwards, a pivotal figure in Liverpool’s resurgence under Jurgen Klopp has agreed to return to Liverpool in a senior role.
Following extensive discussions with the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Edwards has decided to take on a crucial position aimed at preserving and advancing the football legacy established during Klopp’s tenure.
Although Edwards won’t resume his former role as sporting director, a position he relinquished in 2022 after a decade of influential contributions to the renowned recruitment team, he will oversee football operations.
