Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is set to earn his first call-up to the England squad in nearly four years as manager Gareth Southgate grapples with a string of injuries.
There is also speculation that Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite could receive a late opportunity to stake his claim for a spot in the European Championships squad.
Southgate is set to announce his squad for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium on Thursday, with several injuries posing challenges for the England boss, particularly in the full-back positions.
The absence or limited fitness of players like Reece James, Luke Shaw, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier, and Ben Chilwell has left Southgate with a depleted selection pool.
Gomez’s versatility has been a standout feature this season, having featured at both right-back and left-back, as well as in central defence.
His ability to adapt to various roles, coupled with his strong performances, makes him a compelling candidate for an England recall, having last been included in a squad in October 2020.
Meanwhile, Branthwaite’s impressive displays for Everton in recent months could see him join Gomez in Southgate’s squad.
However, Gomez is unlikely to face an awkward reunion with Raheem Sterling, as it’s not expected that Sterling will be included in the latest squad, potentially jeopardising his participation in the European Championships.
Gomez’s anticipated call-up will likely be welcomed by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who has praised the defender’s contributions, particularly after his performance against Manchester City last weekend.
The 26-year-old’s versatility extends to the midfield, where he has also filled in for Liverpool, providing further options for Southgate.
Southgate faces a dilemma in the central midfield position, with questions surrounding Kalvin Phillips’ form during his loan spell at West Ham United.
Manchester United teenager Kobbie Mainoo had been considered as a potential replacement for Phillips but is likely to feature for the England Under-21s instead.
