Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has firmly stated that Xabi Alonso will stay at the club until at least the end of his contract in 2026, despite reported interest from Liverpool.
Alonso emerged as a frontrunner to succeed Jurgen Klopp after the German announced his departure from Anfield at the end of the season.
Following Klopp’s announcement, many fans rallied behind Alonso as a potential replacement.
The 42-year-old has made a strong impression in the Bundesliga with Leverkusen this season.
Notably, Alonso’s team has yet to suffer a defeat in the German top flight and appears poised to challenge Bayern Munich’s dominance.
While there have been reports suggesting Alonso’s openness to a return to Anfield, Carro, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano, maintains that the manager will remain at Leverkusen.
He said: “Xabi Alonso has a contract until 2026 and there is no reason to doubt that he will stay here.
“In football you never know what will happen but I have a lot of trust, we have a good relationship.”
Alonso is not the only manager to have been linked with the prestigious job. Brighton & Hove Albion’s Roberto De Zerbi has garnered significant interest from Premier League clubs following a successful tenure on the South Coast.
Additionally, Sporting’s Ruben Amorim is believed to be in contention.
The owners, FSG, are currently engaged in the process of searching for a new manager, although it remains unclear when they will announce Klopp’s successor.
