Every top level club in the modern era needs a sporting director. The ones who don’t, more often than not do not succeed. The trajectory of a football club in the modern era usually depends on two things, the quality of a manager, and the level of recruitment behind that manager.

It’s no secret Manchester United don’t have a sporting director. It also doesn’t take much research to see how poor their recruitment has been over the last ten years. In order to get back to the top, a sporting director needs to come in.

Paul Mitchell is one of the best in the business, but how has he become one of the most renowned in the game up until this point.

Mitchell has been at Southampton, Tottenham, RB Leipzig, New York Red Bulls, RB Bragantino and Monaco during his time in the scouting and directing game. He was head of scouting at both Tottenham and Southampton, and helped secure the signings of some top players during his time there.

Players Signed During Mitchell’s Time At Spurs/Southampton:

Southampton: Sadio Mane, Dusan Tadic, Tody Alderweireld, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne

Spurs: Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier, Heung-Min Son.

Mitchell was also one of the pressing forces behind RB Leipzig’s ascent to one of the top clubs in German football. Mitchell along with Ralf Rangick signed a string of players that have gone on to join some top European clubs.

RB Leipzig Signings And Where They Are Now:

Ibrahima Konate: Liverpool

Christopher Nkunku: Chelsea

Konrad Laimer: Bayern Munich

Amadou Haidara: RB Leipzig

Dani Olmo: RB Leipzig

Nordi Mukiele: PSG
