Ajax coach John van ‘t Schip has disclosed the club’s keen interest in signing former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson in the January transfer window.

The Dutch club are actively pursuing Henderson as their prime target for an experienced central midfielder, aiming to bolster their squad for the remainder of the season.

The 33-year-old is eager to make a return to Europe as he feels unsettled in Saudi Arabia.

Van ‘t Schip told ESPN Netherlands, ahead of the Eredivisie clash against Go Ahead Eagles, that negotiations are currently in progress regarding the potential transfer.

“There is serious talk going on with Henderson,” Van ‘t Schip said. “He still has some things to arrange in Saudi Arabia.

“It could be a nice match. It’s no secret that we could really use that type of player. Other guys can benefit from that.”

According to ESPN, “Ajax are willing to pay a small transfer fee but are not keen on a loan move. The Eredivisie side recognise Henderson’s transfer value will only decrease due to his age.

“If no compromise is found with Al Ettifaq in the next fortnight, Ajax could switch their attention to other targets in order to strengthen their midfield.”

ESPN further stated that “Al Ettifaq may not be keen to let Henderson leave only months after signing him from Liverpool last summer.”

Jordan Henderson has made 17 league appearances, contributing five assists, with Al-Ettifaq currently positioned eighth in the standings, trailing 28 points behind league leaders Al-Hilal.

Henderson joined Liverpool from Sunderland in a £20 million deal in June 2011. He amassed an impressive record during his time at Anfield, making 492 appearances, scoring 33 goals, and contributing with 57 assists.

His tenure at Liverpool was adorned with several trophies, including the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup, Carabao Cup, and Emirates FA Cup.
