Liverpool defender Calvin Ramsay could leave on loan before the end of the January transfer window amid interest from several clubs, assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders has confirmed.

Ramsay found himself among a group of players who returned to Liverpool prematurely after unsuccessful loan spells, a list that includes Fabio Carvalho, Rhys Williams, and Nat Phillips.

However, Carvalho has secured a loan move to Hull City for the remainder of the season and marked his debut in a 2-1 defeat against Norwich City.

Ramsay joined Preston North End on a season-long loan deal last summer, but his time with the Lilywhites was plagued by fitness struggles.

Asked whether the plan is for Ramsay to complete another temporary switch for the second half of the season, Lijnders said: “Him and Nat [Phillips], good examples. There’s interest – [which] is good.

“We have to find – with the agent, with himself, with the clubs – the right decision for the player. He needs to have game time, needs to play, have a lot of success.

“That’s why I like the move of Fabio [Carvalho], for example. He plays a lot, is straight away decisive – together with Tyler [Morton].

“Matt Newberry, our head of loans, he’s full of business this winter. He needs a holiday after this for sure!

“These boys all have potential, otherwise they would not be with us. But they need as well the right pathway. What you said, a good loan can do wonders.”

Having managed only two appearances for the club, Ramsay faced a setback early in the season with a serious knee injury, sidelining him for almost four months.

His debut under manager Lowe finally came in November against Middlesbrough, followed by a starting role against Queens Park Rangers.

Meanwhile, Nat Phillips may also be on the verge of departing from Liverpool after an unsuccessful loan spell at Celtic, during which he made only eight appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

“With Nat we have to see, we have to see. We have to consider our own situation and stuff like this. He will definitely be with us until the end of the month and then we will have talks and see our situation, that’s how it is,” Klopp said on January 5.

“We really think highly of both, to be honest, because of the things the boys did when they were here. Nat, it didn’t work out 100 per cent at Celtic, a little bit injuries but then if a team like Celtic is in a positive moment and you are in the team you stay in the team, if [they are] not in a positive moment and you are in the team then you might go out, so that says nothing about the quality.

“So, Nat will train with us and then we will see how that develops.”
