Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has revealed how his time on the bench served as motivation for his standout performance at Newcastle.
Despite his relatively limited playing time this season, the 24-year-old made a significant impact by equalising the scoreline after Anthony Gordon’s initial goal for Newcastle.
Nunez went on to secure the victory for Liverpool, who were down to 10 players following Virgil van Dijk’s red card resulting from a challenge on Alexander Isak.
During the encounter, Nunez effectively seized the opportunity that came his way, underlining his prowess as a game-changer. His ability to swiftly adapt to the dynamic demands of the match and convert them into goals showcases his dedication to the team’s success.
“I used to live watching the [social media] networks, it made me bad,” Nunez told ESPN. “They say they keep criticising me, but I don’t see anything [now], I am working in silence and things are working for me. For me, let them speak what they want, my head is fine.
“The coach is the one who decides who plays and I respect their opinion. I continue to work in silence, whatever minutes touch me, I will go in, do my job and try to do my best.
“I entered angry every game, how can I not enter angry? A player always wants to play from the start, more when he has been doing things well. Every time I have to enter I try to do my best, then the coach chooses the team, I am [in the team].
“We all win together and we lose all together. I want it to do well, and also to be that way collectively. Last year we didn’t have a good season, I hope this year things will go better for us,
“They (rest of the attack) are high-level players, I’m at a big club, where there will be healthy competition between the players.”
He added: “I told [Alisson] I didn’t know, he said yes and I denied him. Ali ended up translating for me. I just said: ‘Thank you for your support.’ At that moment you are nervous: I don’t speak much and they make me speak in English! (laughs).”
