Liverpool have confirmed that Darwin Nunez will wear the vacant No. 9 shirt for the new 2023/24 season which commences next month.

Nunez will personally reimburse fans who have already bought his old No.27 shirt after deciding to take the number that was left vacant following the exit of club legend Roberto Firmino upon the expiry of his contract earlier this summer.

Firmino has since joined Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli.

The Uruguay international last wore the shirt number at Benfica prior to his move to Anfield last summer.

“Darwin Nunez will wear the No.9 jersey for Liverpool for 2023-24,” a club statement read.

“The forward has opted to take the number that was left vacant after the departure of Roberto Firmino upon the expiry of his contract earlier this summer.

“Fans who have already purchased new 2023-24 home and away jerseys printed with the name ‘Darwin’ and the number ‘27’ will be personally reimbursed by Nunez with a like-for-like exchange for a ‘Darwin 9’ shirt.”

Nunez will become the latest player to wear the iconic No. 9 shirt at Anfield following in the footsteps of club legends such as Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler, and Fernando Torres.

The 23-year-old netted 15 goals and recorded four assists in 42 appearances for Liverpool in his debut season.
