Renowned journalist David Ornstein, reporting for The Athletic, has shed light on Liverpool’s desire to extend Mohamed Salah’s contract.
However, the 31-year-old faces a crucial decision regarding his future at Anfield.
With only 18 months left on his current contract, speculation has been rife about Salah’s potential departure to Saudi Arabia.
Rumours intensified during the last summer transfer window when Al Ittihad from the Saudi Pro League reportedly presented a verbal offer surpassing £100 million, complemented by substantial add-ons. Liverpool, however, staunchly rejected this proposal.
Despite persistent speculation, Liverpool appear determined to secure the continued presence of their star player well beyond the year 2025.
Salah now stands at a crossroads, and the football world awaits his decision on whether to stay at Anfield or explore new opportunities.
In his latest Q&A for The Athletic, Ornstein said, “Not aware of any decision on that yet. I’m sure Liverpool would like to extend Salah’s contract but, of course, that is his decision and if he doesn’t then all involved will need to decide whether he goes into his final year or a sale is best (depending on offers).
“The strength of interest from Saudi Arabia last summer suggests they will have another go in the next transfer window – but as I’ve said on here before I have heard suggestions that Salah would be keen to keep playing at the highest level in Europe. On this one, we’ll need to be patient.”
Mohamed Salah who has 18 goals and nine assists in 27 appearances for Liverpool this season is set to be on the sidelines for at least a month after suffering a muscle injury during Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Following the injury, he returned to Liverpool on Wednesday to embark on an “intensive rehabilitation program,” facilitated through an agreement between the Premier League club and the Egyptian Football Association.
Despite his commitment to recovery, Mohamed Salah’s return to Merseyside has sparked dissatisfaction in his homeland. In response to critics questioning the forward’s loyalty to Egypt, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has come forward to defend Salah.
“I cannot be part of that discussion,” the German said to beIN SPORTS when asked about Salah potentially putting his club first. “Egypt and Liverpool both have the same interest, we want Mo Salah fit as soon as possible.
“If he stays in Africa and they can’t do the proper treatment, it will just delay everything, especially for Egypt if they go through the tournament.
“We bring him here not because we want to take him away from Egypt but just to offer the best medical treatment. That is all we want.
“It’s all agreed. If Salah is fit and Egypt go to the final, it was always clear, he goes back, 100 per cent. Mo wants that, we want that. We don’t plan with Mo and think we can do a little bit here or there.”
