Pre-season is well underway for the Reds but in today’s 4-4 draw against Bundesliga 2 side Greuther Furth, issues from last season were apparent once again.
Jurgen Klopp’s men took a lead into the break through a great individual goal by Luis Diaz, as Diogo Jota and Ben Doak both missed glorious chances respectively.
However, wholesale changes were made at half-time, with a completely new side coming out onto the pitch.
Despite keeping a clean sheet in the first half, there were signs of frailties, with the home side finding it easy to get through the midfield at times.
These frailties continued into the second half, but this time the personnel were much weaker, especially in the defensive positions.
Greuther Furth equalised after a mistake from goalkeeper Adrian, which some would say is expected. Hard to argue.
A Darwin Nunez double gave Liverpool a comfortable lead, until midfield and defensive problems arose once more.
The hosts score three without reply to take a 4-3 lead, which included a couple of brilliant goals, however, it was clear their were problems within the defensive department, including the midfield.
Although Furth were playing their last pre-season match, the away side made it way too easy for a team with such less talented players to play through them.
The same happened against fellow Bundesliga 2 side, Karlsruher, just days ago in their first pre-season match.
Last season, it was the defence and the protection of the defence that caused headaches for the manager, which led to the side missing out on top four.
It may be just pre-season and players are getting their fitness back, but these issues can not be ignored. Question is, will they be ignored like they were last summer?
