Diogo Jota has delivered an honest assessment following Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Leicester City in a pre-season friendly in Singapore on Sunday.
Darwin Nunez broke the deadlock from close range before Bobby Clark doubled their advantage with a neat finish from a Mohamed Salah lay-off.
Jota headed home the third goal and youngster Ben Doak capped an impressive performance with the fourth goal, heading home at the back post following a corner from summer signing Dominik Szoboszlai.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have scored four goals in each of their three pre-season games and will face Bayern Munich next at the National Stadium on Wednesday.
“We wanted to build in this pre-season: the way we create from the back, the way we press,” said Jota, who was named Player of the Match versus Leicester.
“I think we had good moments [and] not-so-good moments in that first half. I think the result in the end was clearly favourable for us, but we want to build on this physical side of the game and the way we can build as well.”
The Portugal international added: “Of course we want to do a lot better than we did last season. Last season was not great so we really want to improve on that.
“That’s what pre-season is all about, to build and try to get better for the start of the season.”
Jota will hope for an injury-free season after being on the sidelines for several weeks last campaign. He managed to return in time to help Liverpool finish the season strongly.
The Merseysiders missed on Champions League football but qualified for next season’s UEFA Europa League after finishing 5th in the Premier League table.
Jota scored seven goals and recorded eight assists in 28 appearances across all competitions last term.
