Manchester United have made a total of seven new signings this summer including loans, with Mason Mount and Andre Onana likely the most well-known.
Everyone is eager to see how the new players will do and although we’ve had a sneak peek at a few, it’s still too early to say for sure how good any of the players are going to be for the club.
But, we can guess. So here’s each of United’s new signings rated out of ten – with one being awful, five being okay and ten being incredible.
Mason Mount – 6
Signed from Chelsea, Mount should be a decent addition to the side. He’s known for his work rate and ability off the ball and can also pop up with goals and assists. He naturally struggled in a poor Chelsea side last season but should be back to his best if the team can get their performances right.
The club already had Christian Eriksen in a similar role but he is getting older and perhaps that’s why the Englishman, a player still young and coming into his prime, was brought in. The more depth the better, although neither is an “elite” player at this stage.
Andre Onana – 8
The goalkeeper was brought in as the replacement for United’s long-serving goalkeeper David De Gea.
Although it’s big shoes to fill, the Spaniard had been far from his best for years and has always been poor at the modern aspects of goalkeeping.
Onana is a huge upgrade in that sense and should fit Erik Ten Hag’s system to a tee. You only need to look at the Champions League final last season to see how good he is on the ball and we’ve seen it so far this season too. He should fit right in as one of the league’s top goalkeepers.
Rasmus Hojlund – 7
The Denmark international has shown clear signs of having the potential to be a top, top striker.
Although the reported fee of 75million Euros is high for a 20-year-old, he should prove worth it over time. He may not be the perfect striker right away, but he does improve the squad as the only traditional striker and someone who will always be in the box to sniff out opportunities.
Altay Bayindir – 5
For what he is, a backup goalkeeper, it seems an astute enough signing.
Coming as a Turkey international, he’ll be able to step in when Onana leaves for the AFCON and should do a good enough job to not look too out of place.
Sergio Reguilon (Loan) – 5
With the injury crisis at left-back, The Red Devils were desperate to bring someone in there before the transfer deadline and it was the ex-Real Madrid man.
Although he didn’t put his name up in lights at Spurs, he should be able to do the job as a short-term option while the club waits for Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia to get back.
Sofyan Amrabat (Loan with an option to buy) – 7
Coming from Fiorentina, the 27-year-old should sure up what has been a struggling midfield in a defensive sense so far this season. He also has some of the best stats in Europe for progressing the ball from deep, so should add a lot to the team’s build-up play too.
Whether or not he will start ahead of Mount or Eriksen is yet to be revealed, but we could see him play in the games where United will need more protection in the centre. He’ll be a solid addition to the midfield, with Casemiro not getting any younger.
Jonny Evans – 4
This is the one that has left me and many others confused. The squad already has four senior, experienced centre-backs as well as Shaw, Casemiro and Scott Mctominay who can all play there too.
We’ll see if he gets used at all but if he does, it will likely only be in the case of a significant injury problem at the back. Although at 35, you’d be within your rights to question what he offers, he does at least provide some cover.
