Liverpool have had a solid start to the new campaign taking four points from their first two games in the Premier League.
A 1-1 draw against Chelsea was followed up with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday despite Alexis Mac Allister’s harsh sending-off.
Jurgen Klopp has admitted however he is still on the lookout for reinforcements before the transfer window closes on 1st September 2023.
Whilst the main focus this summer has been on a midfield rebuild, there have been strong rumours that the German is also looking for a new central defender.
Five Centre-Backs Liverpool Could Still Target This Summer
Perr Schuurs
The Torino defender had a solid season in Serie A after his transfer from Ajax last summer.
Liverpool have been continually linked with a move for the Dutchman despite their search primarily appearing to focus on a left-sided player.
Schuurs has a market value of €25million according to transfermarkt.co.uk.
Piero Hincapie
Ecuadorian Hincapie has been linked with the Reds over recent days and can operate as a left-sided centre-back or left-back.
The fact that he only turned 21 this year also means that the Bayer Leverkusen defender would not take up a non-homegrown spot this season.
Hincapie has a market value of €35million according to transfermarkt.co.uk.
Arthur Theate
Theate is another left-sided defender who is good on the ball and has been linked with a move to Anfield recently.
The 23-year-old plays for Ligue 1 side Rennes and has been capped eight times by the Belgian national team.
He has a market value of €35million according to transfermarkt.co.uk.
David Hancko
Slovakian Hancko was part of the Feyenoord team that impressed last season in becoming Eredivisie champions.
The 25-year-old is another left-footed option and has a market value of around €25million according to transfermarkt.co.uk.
Nico Schlotterbeck
Borussia Dortmund central defender Schlotterbeck has been hugely impressive for both club and country.
At just 23, he already has nearly 100 Bundesliga games under his belt and transfermarkt.co.uk values the left footed German international at €40million.
The Transfer Room Verdict
The signing of a defender may depend on whether Liverpool make further moves to bolster Klopp’s midfield options.
There is currently only one non-homegrown spot available with Klopp himself admitting that there will be no further outgoings.
Initially, it had looked as though Levi Colwill and Goncalo Inacio were Liverpool’s favoured options this summer but they have both signed new contracts at Chelsea and Sporting CP respectively.
Whilst Schlotterbeck may now offer the best option on the left-hand side of defence, the fact Hincapie would not count as a non-homegrown player immediately could mean he is the favoured option.
The Ecuadorian could then replace Joel Matip who’s contract expires at the end of next season. It should be noted however that Hincapie is associated with the same agent as Moises Caicedo which may or may not count against him.
With no stand out candidate and with the non-homegrown limitations, there is no guarantee that a defender will be signed before the deadline but it promises to be an interesting few days ahead for Liverpool supporters.
