Former Manchester United player Mikael Silvestre has criticised the club’s interest in Chelsea player Marc Cucurella.

The Red Devils have an injury problem at left-back at the moment, with both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia out for what looks to be an extended period of time.

So, Erik Ten Hag has turned to the transfer market for options. Reports have stated that Cucurella is the preferred option but other names such as Spurs’ Sergio Reguilon have been brought up.

Silvestre told Betting Expert: “I’m not sure about Cucurella. Offensively, he has shown a lot of qualities but defensively he’s not great, and United need that platform at the back, so he wouldn’t be my number one pick. Anyone that comes in would be a number three choice.

Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich has been talked about as an option to bring in for the midfield: “He’s (Gravenberch) a good player but I can’t see what he would bring to the midfield. (Marcel) Sabitzer came last season and did okay but couldn’t impose himself, and I can see Gravenberch doing the same.

“United have to go for players that will improve the squad if they want to close the gap on the title contenders.

He finished: “Other than the left back position, I don’t expect any movement for United. They still have the likes of Donny van De Beek as backup up, and the manager doesn’t want to increase the size of the squad.

United will have to get any business done quickly, with deadline day on Friday.
