Erik ten Hag has had a long list of saga’s that he has had to deal with at Manchester United, and unfortunately he now has another. Jadon Sancho’s decision to speak out against his manager yesterday has sparked a media frenzy.
In the hours after Manchester United’s defeat to Arsenal in the most bitter way, Erik ten Hag made clear Jadon Sancho was not in the squad due to his performances in training. Jadon Sancho however disagreed with that sentiment, and feels other factors are at play.
The story is now front page news, in yet another Hollyoaks like drama inside Manchester United football club.
Jadon Sancho’s reaction is strange considering the context we have in the situation already. Kalvin Phillips was branded overweight and unfit by Pep Guardiola last season and agreed, Jadon Sancho hasn’t taken the same view.
The question now is where does this go from here? The Saudi and Turkish transfer markets are still open, but would Sancho be open to a move? Ten Hag has a history of getting rid of players who spoke out against him, even young players. Noa Lang is an example of that.
It’s a situation that needs sorting quickly. Branding your manager a liar in public is a massive accusation, and one that under Sir Alex Ferguson would have meant no way back.
United played well yesterday in a tough game away from home. Sancho’s replacement Antony put in a massive shift on the pitch, showcasing defensive output that we haven’t seen from Jadon yet in a United shirt.
Conversations will need to happen over the international break between player and manager. Manchester United can’t have a Cristiano Ronaldo like saga hanging over their head until January.
