Former Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward has returned to Fenway Sports Group (FSG) in the latest move of the post-Jurgen Klopp rebuild, according to The Telegraph.

Ward, who resigned as sporting director in 2023, has swiftly rejoined the ranks, convinced by Michael Edwards to reunite at Anfield.

Similar to Edwards’ appointment as FSG’s football chief executive, Ward’s role will transcend Liverpool, making him an FSG employee rather than solely focused on Liverpool.

Liverpool remain a pivotal asset within FSG’s portfolio, and Ward’s return marks a reunion for Edwards and principal owner John W. Henry.

Ward assumes the new position of FSG’s technical director, adding to Edwards’ significant moves, including the appointment of Arne Slot as Klopp’s successor.

Pedro Marques, former Benfica technical director, joins as the Director of Football Development, contributing to FSG’s ambitious plans, including the acquisition of a ‘sister’ football club.

Both Marques and Ward will begin their FSG Football roles on June 1.

While Edwards, Marques, and Ward have broader responsibilities, Liverpool’s new sporting director, Richard Hughes, will focus solely on Anfield.

His role will primarily revolve around the AXA Training Ground.

Ward is entrusted with overseeing player development across FSG’s football operations.

Since departing Liverpool, Ward has fielded offers from leading English and European clubs’ ownership groups. His expanded role at FSG has drawn him back, mirroring Edwards’ trajectory.
