Jurgen Klopp has revealed why he left out skipper Jordan Henderson ahead of Liverpool’s opening friendly against Karlsruher SC on Wednesday.

Henderson was not named in the Reds squad for the 4-2 win over the German side after Liverpool agreed a deal in principle worth £12m plus add-ons with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq.

The 33-year-old has two years left on his remaining contract with Merseysiders, however, it is expected to bring his 12-year stay at Anfield to a close this summer.

Klopp said when asked about his decision to play against Karlsruher: “There’s actually nothing to say. As long as things are not really finally decided, we don’t have to talk about it. There will be a moment where we probably have to talk about it, but it’s not now.

“I don’t know that anything is decided, which means nothing to say in the moment. But that’s even better for you because you can speculate, which is much more fun! If I say something then it’s finished!

“In the end, all of these decisions are made by me. And because I respect the players a lot, it’s usually (with their) consent. It was in this case, and it is all fine.”

Henderson could join his teammate Fabinho in Saudi Arabia after Al Ittihad submitted an official bid of £40m for the Brazilian. He is set to undergo medical this week before the deal is announced officially.

Henderson and Fabinho helped Liverpool win the Champions League, Premier League, Club World Cup, Super Cup, Emirates FA Cup, and Carabao Cup.

If the deals go through, the Liverpool duo will join other Premier League stars such as former teammate Roberto Firmino, N’Golo Kanté, and Kalidou Koulibaly in Saudi Arabia.
