Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Thiago Alcantara will feature for Liverpool again this season despite suffering a muscle injury during his comeback game against Arsenal last weekend.
Thiago is now set for another spell on the sidelines, having made his first appearance of the season due to a prolonged hip issue in the 3-1 Premier League defeat at the Emirates Stadium.
The latest injury is a setback for Klopp, who had been eager to leverage the skills of the Spain international.
With Liverpool engaged on multiple fronts in the final stretch of the season, Thiago’s absence poses a challenge for the German as he navigates through all four competitions.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that he is currently in the final year of his contract at Anfield, adding an extra layer of consideration to the club’s future plans.
It is not known how long the midfielder will be on the sidelines, however, he will not be available for the Burnley clash on Saturday.
“Thiago, obviously, is not cool. Everything looked absolutely fantastic in training,” the 56-year-old said.
“We showed quite a lot of things, I think, on LFCTV so you can see the training moments and it looks outstanding so you think, ‘Come on, take him, we have the opportunity, let him play a few minutes’ and then…
“It’s a muscle issue, we don’t know the extent yet. We have to wait there a little bit, but it’s not cool, of course. It was really not good news for him, for us, for everybody. On top of losing the game already and having that is not good.
“Yes [I expect him to play again this season], but we didn’t really think about that, in the moment we just treat the injury and get a full assessment done and knowing exactly where it came from. It’s not the intensity and stuff like this, so there are different things.
“It’s just the normal procedure and it would not be a big story if he wouldn’t have been out for that long a time. That’s how it is. It’s not a big, big injury, definitely not, but it’s obviously something nobody needed.”
The Reds will continue to assess the midfielder and hope it could only be a minor issue as he continues his rehabilitation from a long time out.
