Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expressed strong conviction that his team deserved a last-minute penalty in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City at Anfield.
Following an equalising penalty converted by Alexis Mac Allister, Liverpool dominated much of the second half leaving City’s players and manager Pep Guardiola with much to ponder.
City had initially taken the lead 1-0 at half-time courtesy of John Stones, who capitalised on a well-executed corner routine.
With the momentum in their favor following Mac Allister’s 50th-minute goal, Liverpool pushed hard in the final moments of the game.
As the match entered eight minutes of added time, Liverpool believed they should have been awarded a second penalty.
A challenge by Jeremy Doku on Mac Allister, seemingly in the chest, prompted VAR Stuart Atwell to thoroughly review the decision.
This scrutiny followed on-field referee Michael Oliver dismissing the home side’s vehement protests.
“This situation, in all positions on the pitch, is 100 per cent a foul. It’s 100 per cent a foul and a yellow card,” Klopp told Sky Sports.
“Because he [Doku] hit the ball, yes. But he could only hit the ball because his foot is right there [high up]. And yes, he hit the ball. But if the ball is not there, he kills him [Mac Allister]. That’s how it is, it’s as easy as that.
“It’s a penalty for all football people. It’s a penalty for football people, if you think it’s not one then maybe you’re not a football fan.”
The German added: “It was a really good football game. That was the best performance in the second half we’ve played against Man City.
“We have never dominated so much, we never had them there, we never made so many good decisions, never were so brave, it was unbelievable. Exceptional.
“I’m really happy with the whole performance. The first 10 minutes, maybe we needed a little bit, but after that, we were fully there. What a game, what an atmosphere, what an afternoon.”
