Liverpool have officially announced the appointment of former Everton defender John Heitinga as the newest addition to Arne Slot’s coaching staff.
Heitinga joins the club as the first-team assistant coach, following his recent role in a similar capacity at West Ham United, where he worked alongside David Moyes last season.
Aged 40, Heitinga transitioned into coaching after retiring from professional football in 2016.
He initially worked with various youth teams at Ajax before stepping in as caretaker head coach midway through the 2022/23 season.
He guided the team from fifth place to third following the departure of former coach Alfred Schreuder.
During his playing career as a centre-back, Heitinga featured prominently for clubs such as Ajax, Atletico Madrid, Everton, Fulham, and Hertha Berlin.
He also earned 87 caps for the Netherlands national team, notably being sent off in their 2010 World Cup final defeat to Spain.
Slot, who arrived from Feyenoord in early June, has been assembling his coaching staff, having previously brought assistant boss Sipe Hulshoff with him.
The club have also confirmed Ruben Peeters as the head of performance, while Fabian Otte has been appointed as the new head of goalkeeping.
Earlier this month, Aaron Briggs was announced as Liverpool’s first-team individual development coach.
