Talks between Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold over a new deal are expected this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano via Born ‘n Red, an independent media channel.
The right-back is set to be handed a long-term contract that will go beyond his current deal which expires in 2025. He has forged a reputation as one of the best fullbacks in the world since making his debut for the club against Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup in 2016.
He penned a four-year deal in 2021 after helping the Merseysiders win the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup, and Premier League.
Alexander-Arnold has been Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice right-back for more than six years and has been key for the German during his time at Anfield.
The 24-year-old will be part of the 14 players to report to the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday to begin pre-season preparations and his contract negotiations will be prioritised by sporting director Jorg Schmadtke.
Liverpool have brought in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to revamp their midfield and are expected to add at least one more midfielder before the window closes. Alexander-Arnold was deployed in midfield in the latter stages of last season and he flourished.
He recorded 10 assists and scored four goals in 47 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool who finished 5th in the Premier League and secured qualification to next season’s UEFA Europa League.
It has been reported that Alexander-Arnold will continue in midfield in the coming season following his impressive display in the middle of the park.
He was used again in midfield by England coach Gareth Southgate during the 2024 Euro qualifiers where he scored once and provided two assists for the Three Lions in their victories over Malta and North Macedonia respectively.
