Liverpool are set to match Chelsea’s £55m offer to sign Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia after missing out on Moises Caicedo, according to talkSPORT.

The Reds have seen multiple bids rejected for Lavia by the Saints with the latest worth £46m. The South Coast club want £50m for the Beglium international but it seems they will pocket more than that.

Chelsea are reportedly close to reaching an agreement with Southampton for the signing of the young midfielder and are ready to offer £52m plus £3m in add-ons, however, the player wants to move to Anfield.

Lavia is yet to feature for Southampton this season amid interest from the Reds and the West Londoners. He missed the Saints Championship opener and League Cup defeat to Gillingham in midweek.

The midfielder moved to the St Mary’s Stadium last summer from Manchester City and has four years left on his contract, therefore, Russell Martin’s outfit are under no pressure to sell.

Pep Guardiola’s outfit are entitled to 20 percent of any fee received for his services.

Chelsea have already hijacked Liverpool’s move for Moises Caicedo after agreeing a British record fee of £115m with Brighton despite Jurgen Klopp’s side reaching an agreement worth £111m deal for the 21-year-old on Friday.

Klopp is keen on revamping his midfield following the exit of five senior midfielders including Jordan Henderson and Fabinho who completed their transfer to the Saudi Pro League last month.

Liverpool have already brought in two midfielders following the arrival of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. The club are expected to make further signings before the window closes in September.
