Liverpool have been handed a huge boost as Andy Robertson avoided serious injury in Scotland’s friendly defeat to Northern Ireland, according to The Athletic.
The online news portal claims that “scan results on his ankle showed no bone or ligament damage and the left-back, who limped off late in the first half at Hampden Park on Tuesday, is expected to be sidelined for days rather than weeks.”
Robertson is a doubt for Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League match at home against Brighton on Sunday.
However, if he is unable to participate in that game, he is expected to be available for selection for the following Thursday’s fixture against Sheffield United.
Robertson was forced off the pitch in the first half of Scotland’s game. He initially went down holding his ankle 30 minutes into the game after a challenge from Northern Ireland full-back Trai Hume.
“We’ll assess him,” Scotland manager Steve Clarke said after the game. “He’ll go back to his club and they’ll assess him. Hopefully, he’s back soon.”
Although he received treatment and attempted to continue, he was unable to carry on and was seen walking off the pitch with physios shortly after Conor Bradley scored, leaving his Euro 2024 prospects uncertain.
The injury marks the second setback for Robertson this season.
He was previously sidelined between October and January following a collision with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon during a Euro 2024 qualifier.
Jurgen Klopp has faced challenges throughout the season due to numerous injuries.
Kostas Tsimikas initially filled in for Robertson during his absence, but injuries to Tsimikas himself saw Joe Gomez take on the left-back role.
This season has been unusually difficult for Robertson, who has been a consistent presence in Liverpool’s lineup in previous seasons.
Having played at least 43 games in each of the last five seasons before this one, Robertson’s fitness and consistency have been remarkable.
However, shoulder surgery forced him to miss 21 games this campaign, and he will be eager to avoid further absences.
Meanwhile, vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has been sidelined since February 10 due to a knee injury has been intensifying his rehabilitation efforts during the international break.
However, he is not yet prepared to return to team training. The 25-year-old is expected to make his comeback in approximately two weeks.
