Liverpool have opened negotiations with Sporting head coach Rúben Amorim’s representatives, according to Foot Mercato.
The negotiations between Liverpool and Amorim also include some familiar faces. The Reds have previously collaborated with Amorim’s representatives, who also represent Luís Diaz.
This shared representation establishes a pre-existing rapport between the parties, formed during the Colombian winger’s transfer from Porto.
Xabi Alonso was once considered a strong candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp, who is departing Anfield at the end of the season.
Bayern Munich also expressed interest in bringing their former player back as a successor to the departing Thomas Tuchel.
However, the former Liverpool midfielder is now expected to stay with Bayer Leverkusen, the team he has guided to the cusp of their first Bundesliga title in his first full season as manager.
Amorim, who is open to a Premier League job is a leading contender to replace Klopp ahead of next season.
It is believed that Sporting would demand a compensation of around £17m if any club wants to poach Amorim.
The 39-year-old still has two years left on his current contract in Lisbon. He has garnered significant recognition across Europe for his achievements with Sporting CP.
Amorim has guided Sporting to one Portuguese league title and two League Cup honours, in addition to one with SC Braga.
While speculation continues to swirl around Amorim and the potential for him to replace Klopp at Liverpool, his Sporting side are gearing up to host Benfica in a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday night.
Sporting aim to extend their lead over their bitter rivals in Liga Portugal, potentially opening up a four-point gap at the summit.
