The French outlet claims that Alonso is top of the Reds’ list to replace Klopp, however for now the 42-year-old is happy at Leverkusen as he hopes to lead them to the Bundesliga title.

The former Spain international spent five successful years at Anfield as a player between 2004 and 2009, during which he secured victories in the FA Cup and Champions League.

Following his time with Liverpool, Alonso played for Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. He later returned to the Bundesliga in October 2022 to assume his first senior managerial role as the head coach at Bayer Leverkusen.

Under Alonso’s guidance, Leverkusen have become a formidable team in Germany, currently leading the Bundesliga. They are unbeaten in 20 matches and hold a two-point advantage over Bayern Munich.

Leverkusen maintained their undefeated streak in all competitions this season, showcasing resilience as they rallied from behind to secure a narrow 3-2 victory against the formidable VfB Stuttgart in the DFB Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night.

Alonso’s side became only the second team in German football history to go 30 games unbeaten in all competitions.

Alonso is also attracting interest from Chelsea who are reportedly looking to sack Mauricio Pochettino after a poor run of results.

He signed a new contract with Leverkusen in the summer, which is set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, however, it is understood that he reached a gentleman’s agreement with the club’s hierarchy, allowing him to depart for a top club like Liverpool.
