Jurgen Klopp’s side are keen on bringing in the young defensive midfielder to Anfield this summer following the losses of Naby Keita, James Milner, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Saints want £50m for Lavia who moved to the St Mary’s Stadium last summer from Premier League champions Manchester City. He has four years left on his current contract therefore Russell Martin’s outfit are under no pressure to sell.

Man City are entitled to 20 percent of any fee received for his services.

Lavia was in action for the newly relegated side as they lost 3-2 to Bournemouth in a pre-season friendly, featuring for only 45 minutes on Tuesday night.

After the game, Martin admitted that the Belgium U-21 international has a ‘lot in his head’ amid interest from Liverpool.

“The transfer window should close before the start of the season – it’s ridiculous in my opinion and certainly not helpful,” the Southampton manager told as Southern Daily Echo.

“We’re a club that has been relegated and has a lot of talent that people are attracted to, but we’ll prepare as if they will be here because we have to. There’s no guarantee that anyone will leave, it’s a lot of work with 27 players or whatever but we’ll give everyone a chance to get on the pitch.

“I thought Romeo, considering what’s going on, to play tonight and do all that stuff, it was good for him to get on the pitch as he has not had the minutes other people have had.

“You can ask for an update but I can’t give you one because I don’t know. I’m going to speak to Jason (Wilcox) now but I’ve been preparing for this game. I’ll only ever be honest with you guys but I’m yet to find out.”

Lavia is open to joining Liverpool ahead of Chelsea and Arsenal in the coming days with the Premier League commencing next month.

Liverpool have already signed Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai and are still in the market to make further midfield reinforcements.

The Merseysiders have been linked with a move for several midfielders including Crystal Palace’s Cheick Doucoure, Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat, Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch, and Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips.
