Liverpool have made a formal request to the PGMOL for the audio between referee Simon Hooper and VAR Darren England which led to Luis Diaz’s goal being disallowed in the Reds’ 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
After Curtis Jones had been sent off following a VAR referral for serious foul play, Diaz appeared to give the Reds the lead after being played in by Mohamed Salah. The assistant referee incorrectly flagged the Colombian offside however but VAR failed to overturn the decision.
It soon became clear from the TV images that a mistake had been made and the PGMOL issued a statement after the match explaining the issue as ‘significant human error’.
Son Heung-min gave Tottenham the lead shortly after but that was cancelled out just before the interval when Cody Gakpo turned and fired home Virgil van Dijk’s knock down from a Dominik Szoboszlai cross.
After the break, Hooper sent off Diogo Jota in controversial fashion for two yellow card offences before Joel Matip heartbreakingly sliced an attempted clearance into his own net in the 96th minute to give Spurs the victory.
Liverpool Request VAR Audio From PGMOL
Liverpool issued a statement of their own on Sunday evening requesting ‘full transparency’ on the situation and according to James Pearce, they have now followed that up by asking for the audio of the controversial incident.
It looks like being a difficult few days for the PGMOL with the Anfield hierarchy clearly wanting further clarity regarding the incident.
