Liverpool are in the process of finalising a deal to appoint Xabi Alonso “behind the scenes” as they develop a succession plan for Jurgen Klopp’s impending departure, which was announced in January, according to Football Insider.
The online news portal claims that “the Reds are ready to “break the bank” to get him.”
“The Merseysiders haven’t given up on luring their former midfielder back to Anfield in the off-season.”
Both Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen, where Alonso currently manages, are enjoying successful seasons in their respective leagues.
Liverpool currently hold the second position in the Premier League, tied on points but trailing slightly on goal difference, while Leverkusen are positioned well to challenge Bayern Munich’s dominance in the Bundesliga.
Alonso has been heavily linked with the soon-to-be vacant managerial position at Anfield following Klopp’s announcement of his departure at the end of the season.
Fenway Sports Group, the owners of Liverpool, have already appointed Michael Edwards as the CEO of Football and Richard Hughes as the club’s next sporting director.
The final task for Edwards and Hughes is to identify the ideal successor to Klopp for the upcoming summer.
Alonso commenced his senior management career at the club in October 2022, yet he has swiftly gained recognition as one of the world’s most promising young managers.
The 42-year-old is currently under contract with Leverkusen until June 2026.
Liverpool are currently conducting interviews with other potential candidates and has contingency plans in place in case Alonso declines the offer.
