The situation at centre-back for Manchester United at present is bleak, and the club are aware of it. Lisandro Martinez is set to miss 3 months through injury and with Raphael Varane’s history on the treatment bed, the club are in deep waters.

A centre-back was something that was looked at in the summer, but did not happen in the end. The club looked at Benjamin Pavard to replace Harry Maguire, but the deal fell through with West Ham.

United are now adamant on signing a defender for 2024, and have began the process behind the scenes.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have began internal discussions at the club about a new centre-back. They want to sign one in 2024.

United have previously been scouting Jean-Clair Todibo from OGC Nice, and he remains on the list. Antonio Silva is also another player the club admire, as well as Edmond Tapsoba from Bayer Leverkusen. More defenders could be added to the list soon.

Harry Maguire is expected to leave the club this summer. There are also discussions going on as to whether to award Victor Lindelof a new contract, or let him leave.

The club are primarily looking at a new right centre-back due to Raphael Varane’s age and injury record. A left centre-back however cannot be ruled out, and will also be explored.

Ousmanne Diomande from Sporting CP is also someone to keep an eye out for with Manchester United.
