Michael Edwards, a pivotal figure in Liverpool’s resurgence under Jurgen Klopp has agreed to return to the club in a senior role, according to The Telegraph.
Following extensive discussions with the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Edwards has decided to take on a crucial position aimed at preserving and advancing the football legacy established during Klopp’s tenure.
Although Edwards won’t resume his former role as sporting director, a position he relinquished in 2022 after a decade of influential contributions to the renowned recruitment team, he will oversee football operations.
His primary focus will be appointing a new sporting director, with Richard Hughes expected to join him in the summer, following his announced departure from Bournemouth.
Edwards will reunite with other key figures, including chief scout Barry Hunter and Head of Recruitment Dave Fallows, who played vital roles in building Liverpool’s squad that is currently competing on all fronts.
FSG sees Edwards’ return as a significant coup, ending a protracted negotiation period led by John W. Henry and Michael Gordon. Gordon, overseeing club strategy, considered Edwards’ return paramount given the substantial void left by Klopp’s departure.
Recognising the importance of both the managerial appointment and stability behind the scenes, Liverpool aim to ensure a seamless transition.
Edwards’ role will involve assisting in the appointment and support of Klopp’s successor, contributing to the continuity of the successful structures established since 2015.
Despite being a sought-after sporting director during his 20-month absence from Liverpool, Edwards turned down multiple opportunities, including interest from Premier League clubs like Chelsea.
Liverpool persistently pursued his return, and after multiple approaches, Edwards softened his resistance, agreeing to a face-to-face meeting in Boston with Henry and Gordon to discuss the nuances of his new role.
