Liverpool are set to complete the signing of Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton this week.
The Reds have been in negotiations with Seagulls for the World Cup winner, who has a release clause of between £45m and £55m in his contract.
Mac Allister penned a new deal with Brighton last October which runs until the summer of 2025, with an option for an extra 12 months.
However, it is believed that his release clause has been met by Liverpool, and Jurgen Klopp’s side have already agreed personal terms with the 24-year-old.
Though he is yet to put pen to paper, former Premier League player Martin Keown believes the South American will do well at Anfield.
“I think he is an outstanding player. We saw that during the World Cup. When (Lionel) Messi came deep, he was flying forward. He operates very intelligently,” he told talkSPORT.
“Great technique, an eye for goal. (He will be) a really top signing. Good business again. It’s not a ‘steal’ but I think it is worth paying for a player of his quality. It’s healthy, in a way, that Brighton are letting him move on.
“He will do well there. He gives (Liverpool) a bit more backbone and quality.”
Klopp is keen on revamping his midfield following the exit of Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Milner, while Arthur Melo will return to Juventus at the end of his loan deal.
Mac Allister is expected to be the first arrival at the club this summer with several players expected to follow as Klopp hopes to get the bulk of his summer signings done before the squad reconvenes on July 8.
