Liverpool have opened negotiations with newly relegated Southampton for the signing of Romeo Lavia, according to Football Insider.

The online news portal claims that the Reds will face stiff competition for Lavia’s signature from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Arsenal who are also interested in acquiring his services this summer.

Jurgen Klopp is keen on revamping his midfield following the exit of Naby Keita, James Milner, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in June. Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are also set to follow suit as they close in on moves to Saudi Arabia.

Henderson completed his medical ahead of his proposed £12m move to Steven Gerrard’s side Al Ettifaq while talks have taken place over the structure of Fabinho’s deal after Al Ittihad tabled a bid of £40m last week.

The imminent exit of the experienced duo has opened the door for further midfield additions in the coming weeks with Klopp claiming that the club will make at least one midfield signing before their Premier League opener against Chelsea.

A host of midfielders have been linked with a move to Anfield including Ryan Gravenberch, Aurelien Tchouameni, Joshua Kimmich, and Cheick Doucoure, however, Lavia has emerged as a prime target.

The 19-year-old was one of the consistent performers for Southampton last season, racking up 34 appearances across all competitions and making two goal contributions.

Lavia moved to the Saint Mary’s Stadium last summer from Manchester City and Pep Guardiola’s side are entitled to 20 percent of any fee received for his services.

The Saints value the Belgium U-21 international at £50m. The asking price could be a stumbling block but Liverpool have been encouraged by the player’s desire to join them and believe a deal could be agreed soon.

Liverpool have already wrapped deals for midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai but are hoping to add another midfielder to their squad by the end of the month.
