Josko Gvardiol is on the verge of becoming the most expensive defender in the history of the game, but United chose another left footer over him last summer.
Lisandro Martinez has become a fan favourite since signing for United last summer, and he was chosen ahead of Gvardiol by the club. Gvardiol was on a shortlist of defenders for United last summer.
Martinez cost United around £47million before add-ons.
United Chose Martinez Over Gvardiol:
As reported by Paul Hirst, Manchester United opted to sign Lisandro Martinez instead of Josko Gvardiol last summer. Martinez was chosen from a shortlist of seven defenders.
It could be the battle of the left footers in the United derby’s now, with both clubs boasting the best left footed centre-backs in the entire world.
Martinez has went from strength to strength since signing for United, and Gvardiol will be hoping to have a similar season to that of the Argentine last summer.
The pair played against each other in the World Cup semi-final last year, with Martinez coming out on top on that occasion. United will look back and be happy about their decision, but that’s not to say City won’t be just as happy with Gvardiol in the upcoming season.
Gvardiol to City is likely to be done by the end of the week.
