According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, in the event of Xabi Alonso’s departure from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, he is more likely to join Bayern Munich than Liverpool.

Alonso, a former player for both Bayern and Liverpool, is currently on the verge of leading Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever German Bundesliga title.

Additionally, they are set to face West Ham United in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, with a potential semi-final matchup against either AC Milan or Roma awaiting them should they progress past David Moyes’s side.

The draw for the Europa League has set up the tantalising prospect of a clash between Leverkusen and Liverpool at the AVIVA Stadium in Dublin.

With both the Bavarians and the Reds seeking new managerial appointments this summer, Alonso’s potential availability has sparked interest from both clubs.

Thomas Tuchel is set to depart from Bayern at the end of the current season, coinciding with Jurgen Klopp’s announcement to step down as manager of Liverpool back in January.

Despite Klopp’s pending exit, Liverpool currently stand in second place in the Premier League, tied on points with league leaders Arsenal.

Alonso’s current contract with Bayer Leverkusen is set to run until 2026.

Providing an update on Alonso’s future, Florian Plettenberg said: “Bayern are pushing for him but there are no negotiations. Talks have taken place, but no negotiations.

“It’s difficult to get him, but Bayern Munich is optimistic.

“Clubs like Liverpool and Real Madrid want to sign him.

“But, again, our clear information, if he would leave Leverkusen in the summer, he would join Bayern Munich and not Liverpool.”
