West Ham executive Tim Steidten has clarified that Liverpool have not reached out to him regarding the potential role of becoming the club’s new sporting director.
The Reds are actively seeking to fill this crucial backroom position following the departure of Jorg Schmadtke last month.
Schmadtke joined the club in June of last year, taking charge of the football operations department and spearheading both incoming and outgoing transfers. He brought extensive experience to the role, having previously held similar positions at Wolfsburg, Cologne, Hannover, and Alemannia Aachen.
Steidten is among the candidates on the Reds’ list. He assumed the role of technical director at West Ham just last summer following his previous tenure at Bayer Leverkusen, where he notably appointed Xabi Alonso as manager.
In an interview with Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, the 44-year-old acknowledged the honour of being associated with the Anfield job.
While expressing contentment with his current position at the Hammers, he did not categorically dismiss the possibility of making a switch.
“I’ve heard that I am supposed to be on the list at Liverpool. It is one of the biggest clubs in the world, so it’s an honour. But so far nobody from LFC has contacted me yet,” Tim Steidten told Florian Plettenberg.
“I generally feel very comfortable at West Ham. I quickly realised how intense this league is. Accordingly, we signed the right players in the last transfer windows. The squad is strong, so we can achieve our goals.
“I am looking forward facing the next weeks and months until the end of the season. Of course, we are already planning the next window. What happens to the future, we will see.”
Liverpool are considering the appointment of a sporting director before finding a replacement for Jurgen Klopp, who surprised everyone with the announcement of his departure at the end of the 2023-24 season. The recruitment search is being led by Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon.
Xabi Alonso is currently the leading candidate for the role, especially with Bayer Leverkusen showing strong form and being in contention for their first Bundesliga title.
Leverkusen thrashed Bayern Munich 3-0 on Saturday to move five clear points at the top of the league table.
