Liverpool duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai will both miss the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea later this month due to injury, according to The Telegraph.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed last weekend that Alexander-Arnold injured the same knee where he recently suffered ligament damage in their 3-1 win over Burnley in the Premier League.

He was subsequently withdrawn at halftime and replaced by Harvey Elliott during the break at Anfield.

A series of scans this week have revealed he will require a period of recovery. The timescale is unspecified but the Wembley meeting against Chelsea at the end of February is expected to come too soon for the 25-year-old.

The England international will now miss Liverpool’s next five games in all competitions including Premier League encounters against Brentford, Luton Town, and Nottingham Forest.

Alexander-Arnold is hopeful he will be ready for the Anfield visit of Manchester City on March 10. He has been one of the standout players for the Reds this season.

He has the most assists (58) for a defender in Premier League history, surpassing his team-mate Andy Robertson (57) after setting up Diogo Jota’s goal against the Clarets on Saturday.

The Telegraph reports that “Alexander-Arnold aggravated the knee injury because of his determination to play through the pain barrier, making his comeback too soon.”

Speaking last weekend, Klopp said he hoped his vice-captain’s problem was minor.

“Same area in the knee. Nothing really bad, but he felt it again and we have to see, we have to assess it,” he said.

“Trent said it’s fine, but it’s not fine (because) he feels it, so we had to be careful and take him off.”

Klopp could turn to Joe Gomez and Northern Ireland youngster Conor Bradley who returned to training on Tuesday after a period of compassionate leave for the right-back position.

Both are in contention to face Thomas Frank’s side on Saturday. Liverpool have also been boosted by the return of Mohamed Salah, who has resumed full training after the hamstring issue suffered at the 2023 African Cup of Nations while playing for Egypt.

Salah is expected to be part of the squad travelling to London, however, Dominik Szoboszlai is another key player who is set to miss the Carabao Cup final as he undergoes treatment for a hamstring issue.
